This marks the sixth consecutive year that Kia earned the top spot for the J.D. Power U.S. Initial Quality Study, which measures the quality of vehicles over the first 90 days of ownership. For the 2020 U.S. Initial Quality Study, 189 models across 26 vehicle segments were analyzed, using information gained from 87,282 vehicle owners. Respondents for the study were asked to give feedback on such things as engine and transmission performance, driving experience, and many different quality issues. Scores were recorded on the basis of problems per the number of vehicles, with a lower score reflecting a higher quality. Kia greatly impressed with a score of 136 problems per 100 vehicles.
